THE TRAINING GAME

Astrapak has joined forces with SAPICS to train staff at three of its Cape sites
Thermopac, a division of Astrapak, has been successfully working with SAPICS in the area of training and skills improvement for a number of years.
Recently, three Western Cape Astrapak companies have been taking part in the education initiative, namely Plastform, Thermopac and Hilfort Plastics. Their involvement over the last two years has mainly been within the distribution and warehousing environments. All three companies started off with Basics of Stores and Stock Control, moved on to Basics of Production and Inventory Management, and currently they are on the third module of the APICS fundamental series.
In addition, a team from each of the three companies took part in the APICS Lean Enterprise Programme. Three members of the group are working their way through the CPIM and two have gained their CSCP certification.
The benefits of SAPICS training? According to Marius van Staden of Astrapak, staff are empowered with knowledge, they find more meaning in their work, and they are able to be promoted to more senior positions.
“It is Astrapak’s ongoing quest to improve its workforce and products through education,” said Marius. This ethos impressed the judges at SAPICS, and as a result they awarded Astrapak an Education Excellence Award in the Corporate Educator of the Year 2009 Category.
Astrapak’s enthusiasm, and results have inspired some their some of their customers who will be participating in future education.
