MERSETA DEVELOPING NEW INDUSTRY SKILLS PLAN

‘Value chains’ for sub-sectors with typical jobs at each point in chain

The Plastics Chamber at MERSETA is currently developing the industry’s skills plan for 2010. The skills plan will include the sub-sectors for industrial rubber, polymer composites and thermoplastics fabrication.

As part of the process, the MERSETA is planning to develop value chains for each sub-sector and attaching typical jobs at each point in the value chain. This will assist in getting an idea of where precisely skills shortages lie and possibly also how one can address them. As an added benefit, such process ‘maps’ can be sued for career guidance, both for those already in the industry but also for potential new-comers.

The Chamber has asked Chris Vorwerk to assist them in the process. Chris was training director at the Plastics Federation in the 1980s and 90s, and will also be remembered for assisting Mike Bullock to develop and implement the training scheme of the Plastics Industry Training Board. Chris has been providing technical support to the Department of Labour for the past five years, specifically in making the National Qualifications Framework more industry friendly. Aligning jobs with value chains in industry is an outcome of this work.

One of the challenges that the Chamber faces is the lack of adequate employment statistics and industry growth forecasts. If anyone can contribute such statistics, they can contact Chris at chris@xasa.co.za or 082 852 7655.
