Polymer science student receives award at international conference

Gareth Bayley, a doctoral research student in Polymer Science at Stellenbosch University, has won the Carl Klason Prize for the best oral paper presented by a student at the World Forum on Advanced Materials (Polychar 18).

Polychar 18, which was held in Siegen in Germany, brought together established polymer scientists from academia and industry as well as young researchers and students from over 30 countries to discuss the synthesis, characterisation and application of polymeric materials and biorelated polymers.

Bayley presented a paper on the production and use of carbon nanotube filled nanofibres made from a novel organic-inorganic polymer. The paper also presented the use of these novel nanofibres in producing flexible silicone composites.

This work is part of his PhD research under the supervision of Prof Peter Mallon in the SU Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science.
This is yet another feather in Bayley’s cap: he recently also won a poster prize at the South African Chemical Institute National Convention.
